When the British Colonial days ended, a British military presence was maintained on the island, which was considered to be in an important strategic Mediterranean position.
With typical Cypriot hospitality, the islanders welcomed the British territories arrangement.

The British bases (shown on the map above in red)are regarded in much the same light as the holiday villages. Indeed, the spending patterns of the British army families don't differ much from holiday-makers and the majority of the other ex-pats.
British ex-pat villages are an important part of the Cypriot economy, both North and South.
British ex-pat villages, known as Districts, are shown on the map below left. The map below right shows Districts in both Greek and Turkish Cyprus.

I shall be in Northern Cyprus during January, and will post the new maps asap. All the district and city street maps will also be posted then, and a new Road Atlas, which will show the very considerable network of new roads in Northern Cyprus built over the last 18 months.
I'll post the old Road Maps too, marked-up to show detailed up-dates on which of the practically deserted but still open old roads now make good scenic routes and/or shortcuts.
Plus the 2007 timetables and new routes for the door-to-door bus services.
Sorry to keep you hanging, but I promise it will be worth the wait!
