Cyprus Summers: Sunscreen is a must!

Aiya Napa
Aiga Napa:
Heart of Cypriot Nightlife!

Aiga Napa, or Aiya Napa – as it is often spelt – has long been known as .....
Cyprus summers are long and hot. The sun blazes down every day and rainfall is rare. Although this is marvellous for lazy days at the ppol, it's important to protect your skin, especially if - like most holiday makers in Cyprus, you come from a country where the climate is damp and mild.

Ultraviolet rays come in two forms: UVA and UVB

UVB rays can cause an almost immediate adverse skin reaction - painful redness and sensitive swelling normally called "sunburn" - which you feel within hours of being out in the sun.

What isn't so well known is that your skin is also damaged just by being "sun kissed" - the very smooth glowing look which we chase the sun in order to acquite! That's because the glow comes from increased blood flow to the outer skin as your body tries to repair the damage done by the sun.

UVB rays have also been tied in to skin cancer and to cataract formation.

Your skin responds differently to UVA rays.

Everyone's skin holds an element called melanin, which is what causes white skin to go bronze or brown in the sun.

Heartland of Cyprus

The city of Limassol, second largest in Cyprus, presents a fascinating mix .....
Darker-skinned peoples have melanin in surface skin layers permanently, which is why their skin is brown or black in color. Caucasions only produce melanin in the deeper skin layers, and sun exposure results in the pigment coming to the surface in a few days. We call this "tanning". A tan may look great, but on naturally fair skin, it's really the body's attempt to protect itself from too much sun.

Traditionally, the UVA rays which cause tanning were thought to be safe. But now it is known that they too are dangerous. In extreme cases, over-exposure to UVA rays can cause melanoma, a severe
form of skin cancer.

Sooner or later, everyone gets wrinkles. But without the right kind of sun protection, your skin will age a lot faster, and irreversibly.

So don't go out into the hot Cyprus sunshine without sun protection!

Sun Blocks and Sun Screens

Traditional sun screens include zinc oxide and titanium oxide.
Creams containing zinc oxide offer stronger protection, and are now available in the form of a cream that "disappears" into your skin, creating an invisible shield which reflects damaging UVB and UVA sun rays away from your skin.

there are many other good sunscreens, containing safeguards such as
PABA, Cinnamates, Benzophenones and Anthranilates.

Most sunscreens product contain several protective elements, because a combination of ingredients has been shown in research to work best.

Make the Most of YOUR Holiday Money

The secret to getting the most out of your .....
Theis is described as an SPF number. That usually tells you how much time you can safely spend enjoying the sun without getting sunburn.

SPF 15, for example, will theoretically give you 15 times as long on the beach, safely. But how long that is will depend on your skin type and also on the wind and humidity factors. Generally speaking, the darker your skin is naturally, the more time you can safely spend in the sun without precautions, and therefore the longer you can stretch your time in the sun when using sunscreen.

Cyprus is humid, and usually there is a "cooling" breeze. That feels nice, but it also means that you should exercise caution when sunbathing.

Some sunrays will still reach your skin, even if you
use lotion with an SPF 30 number. And that's what you want, after all! Because a tan is nice, providing you don't overdo it.

You will notice that Cypriots cover their skins, waer sunhats and sit in the shade of awanings. Because sand, water and concrete all reflect the sun's rays, you will still be able to tan even when you spend most of your holiday in shady spots. Enjoy the Cyprus sun, but take care of your skin, too.
