Ercan Airport is in Northern Cyprus, the TRNC, near Nicosia. Ercan flights are restricted due to the international political restrictions which affect entry into Northern Cyprus. Ercan is also the closest airport to Kyrenia, or Girne as it is called in Northern Cyprus.

Since 2005 there have been frequent scheduled airline flights from Europe and the UK to Ercan International Airport. These flights are operated by Turkish Airlines, Onar Air, and Cyprus Turkish Airlines (Kibris).
The other scheduled airlines do not fly direct to the island, because technically the Turkish side of Cyprus is still under international interdict. But in practice many major airlines fly into Turkey, and transfer to a Cypriot flight at Istanbul or Ankara is quick and easy, so loads of travel agents will book you straight through to Ercan airport if that's where you want to go.
Many people do want to go there, and feel hopeful that given the Turkish side of the island's positive attitude towards the UN peace plan Ercan airport will soon be directly accessible and not, as now, only reachable via Turkey. Atlas Jets operate flights to Ercan airport, and Pegasus plans to begin flights from the UK during the 2007 summer season.
It is also possible to fly into Turkey and then take a ferry-boat into Kyrenia or Famagusta.

In practice, the easiest and most pleasant way to get to Northern Cyprus by air is to fly into Larnaca International Airport and then to travel on by car (or taxi) across the Green Line (as the Greek/Turkish border is called) which is laughably easy to do.
Contrary to popular belief, international travellers are not charged for a Visa when they cross into Northern Cyprus from the South. Simply, your driver gives the Customs officials your passport, in which they place a small loose piece of paper - your Visa - which gives you the right to pass back and forth across the Green Line as often as you please during your stay. Your passport is not stamped and there is no fee.
Some travel operators do make a so-called Visa charge, but there are actually no Visa fees. If a travel agent charges for a Visa, then in order to avoid this unnecessary cost, simply say that you will get your own Visa
Travelling with Pets
However, if you are a pet owner travelling by air with your pet who does not yet have a full EU Pet Passport, suddenly travelling into Ercan airport becomes the no-brainer choice. Northern Cypriots simply adore animals, especially dogs. Quarantine is brief (4 weeks) and totally painless. You can visit your pet for as long as you like every day. To all intents and purposes, if your attitude towards the Veterinary Customs officials is co-operative and respectful then Quarantine hardly exists at all!
Documentation required to bring your pet into North Cyprus is just a Health Certificate from a recognised Vet.

Alternative Air Routes and Air Fares
Flying into Ercan is not the cheap flight choice. A typical return fare from the UK to Ercan Airport is about £300(UK). Flights to Larnaca and a taxi from Larnaca to Kyrenia will cost slightly less overall than flying into Ercan.
Some travellers are tempted by cheap flights to Paphos airport. It's perfectly feasible to get very cheap charter flights to Paphos and then travel on by taxi to Kyrenia although the taxi fare will be about £100(UK) to £120(UK). It's worth remembering that facilities at Paphos are usually totally overwhelmed on Wednesdays (the busiest charter day).
