HOLIDAY MONEY VALUE BONANZA!
In Northern Cyprus, offer British Pounds Sterling in payment at all shops, but NOT in your hotel.
There are 3 reasons:
a) Northern Cypriots are nostalgic for the colonial days. They think of the £ Sterling as almost their national currency.
b) In shops, you will potentially Save Two Ways on the Exchange Rate :
(i) If you're from the UK then you don't need to pay currency exhange fees or commissions. (ii) Typically, Northern Cypriot shops offer a very good exchange rate on all currencies, and noticeably more so on the £ (UK). This means that you can buy for less, and will also be given change in Turkish Lira at the best available Exchange Rate.
c) Northern Cypriots often "translate" local Turkish currency into £ (CYP). The Cypriot Pound is at present worth roughly 25% more than the British Pound. This means that if you offer payment in £ (UK) you can often get services - such as taxi fares - at about 10% to 20% lower cost than if you offered Turkish Lira or Cypriot Pounds for the same item.
However, do not change money at your Northern Cyprus hotel if you can help it, because you will get a far better rate of exchange almost anywhere else, and particularly in the local Bureau de Change. All the internal North Cypriot Bureau de Change offer far better rates than can be sourced outside Cyprus.
